Monitoring the CoT has been found to be an effective way of identify ing reasoning failures and catching unwanted behaviour. However\, the reli ability of this monitoring and the faithfulness of these explanations is n ot guaranteed. It is currently not well understood in which situations CoT monitoring can be trusted\, or how different training procedures influenc e this. This talk will outline work from two papers that deal with these i ssues. First\, I will discuss how suitable CoT monitoring is for detecting whether vision-language models rely on visual or textual inputs when the two conflict. Second\, I will discuss how efficient reasoning training aff ects the faithfulness and monitorability of CoT. It has been suggested tha t training models to reason with fewer tokens may make their CoT less trus tworthy. While I show that CoT’s trustworthiness depends partly on this training\, both papers highlight that trustworthiness of the CoT primarily depends on how it is defined and measured. Finally\, I will discuss this research area as a whole and future directions I am excited about.\n\nBook a meeting: For staff or students who’d like to meet with Sam Lewis-Lim during their visit please check availability using the booking form<https: //airtable.com/appS4gTxm7BAJVK3b/shrgbmVr7xovtcVSX/tbl2bWMMMm8g0sLoC>.\n\n Student Lunch: For research students who wish to meet with the speaker ove r lunch please sign up here<https://airtable.com/appS4gTxm7BAJVK3b/pag2vE1 8BlgykntD8/form>.\n\nUpcoming Seminars: Upcoming Seminars | ILCC | School of Informatics<https://informatics.ed.ac.uk/ilcc/news-events/upcoming-semi nars>\n\nThank you\, Pauline\n\n__________________________________________ ______________________________________\nMicrosoft Teams meeting\nJoin: htt ps://teams.microsoft.com/meet/336549012733552?p=c2ZCwFg8ADmbV5SluK\nMeetin g ID: 336 549 012 733 552\nPasscode: ir2yf73i\n___________________________ _____\nNeed help?<https://aka.ms/JoinTeamsMeeting?omkt=en-US> | System ref erence<https://teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-join/19%3ameeting_MzIyYTkwZDUt ZTdmNC00NmNiLTlhZGUtYTY1OTMwOWJkMjli%40thread.v2/0?context=%7b%22Tid%22%3a %222e9f06b0-1669-4589-8789-10a06934dc61%22%2c%22Oid%22%3a%22aea10fbf-6f83- 4c68-a336-54ec30f1a484%22%7d>\nFor organizers: Meeting options<https://tea ms.microsoft.com/meetingOptions/?organizerId=aea10fbf-6f83-4c68-a336-54ec3 0f1a484&tenantId=2e9f06b0-1669-4589-8789-10a06934dc61&threadId=19_meeting_ MzIyYTkwZDUtZTdmNC00NmNiLTlhZGUtYTY1OTMwOWJkMjli AT thread.v2&messageId=0&lan guage=en-US>\n[Company Logo]\nThe University of Edinburgh is a charitable body\, registered in Scotland\, with registration number SC005336.
