[aiai-seminars] Canceled: *CANCELLED* AIAI Seminar: Monday 19th January 1
4:00\, Room Informatics G.03\, Speaker Ursula Martin\n\n\nHello\, today’
s talk has provisionally been rescheduled for Monday 16th March.\n\nHello
all\,\n\nThere will be an AIAI Seminar on Monday 19th January in Informati
cs Forum G.03 by visiting speaker Ursula Martin.\n\nTitle: Will machines c
 hange pure mathematics?\n\nSpeaker: Ursula Martin\nhttps://www.maths.ox.ac
.uk/people/ursula.martin\n\nAbstract: Recent months have seen astonishing
advances in the use of AI techniques in mathematical papers: “vibe codin
g” by non-experts to produce formal proofs in LEAN\; expert human guidan
ce of LLMs produce credible\, if derivative\, research papers\; specialis
t algorithms such as AlphaGeometry\; and sophisticated use of machine lear
ning to search for examples.\n\nTheir development (at huge cost in compute
power and energy) has been accompanied by an unfamiliar and exuberant lev
el of hype from well-funded start-ups claiming to “solve mathematics”
and the like. And it raises questions beyond the technical concerning gove
rnance\, funding and the nature of the mathematical profession.\n\nTo try
and understand what’s going on and where future challenges might lie\, w
e look historical examples of changes in mathematical practice - as an exa
mple we consider key developments in the early days of computational group
theory.\nThe University of Edinburgh is a charitable body\, registered in
Scotland\, with registration number SC005336. Is e buidheann carthannais
a th’ ann an Oilthigh Dhùn Èideann\, clàraichte an Alba\, àireamh cl
 àraidh SC005336.\n
