From Perception to Collaboration to Commander's Intent\n\nAbstrac t: For more than 50 years\, advances in sensing\, perception\, artificial intelligence\, and computing have enabled robots to navigate\, recognize o bjects\, and make increasingly sophisticated decisions. Yet truly autonomo us systems capable of collaborating and achieving shared mission objective s remain elusive. Why?\nPerhaps the greatest obstacle is not technological \, but architectural and institutional. Decades of research within closed architectures\, proprietary ecosystems\, and isolated demonstrations have produced sophisticated but disconnected platforms. We have optimized indiv idual robots rather than collective missions\, limiting interoperability\, collaboration\, and operational scalability. This presentation explores w hy progress in perception has outpaced our ability to build connected\, mi ssion-aware systems. True autonomy requires resilient communications\, sha red mission understanding\, coordinated decisions\, and the ability to ada pt when connectivity fails.\nUltimately\, the missing element is Commander 's Intent—the ability to understand the purpose behind a mission and col laboratively achieve its objectives\, even when disconnected. We spent 50 years teaching robots to perceive the world. Now we need to teach them to understand the mission.\n\nBio: Dr. Peter Drewes is a seasoned technology executive and strategist with over 25 years of experience at the intersect ion of artificial intelligence\, autonomous systems\, and defence innovati on. Currently serving in a Futures/technology role at SAIC\, he leads next -generation autonomy and modelling & simulation initiatives\, with recent contributions to multibillion-dollar AI-based training and experimentation programs\, including the AUKUS Talisman Sabre 2025 experiment. His career spans leadership roles at Lockheed Martin\, Amazon Web Services\, and SAI C\, where he has consistently translated cutting-edge AI/ML research into real-world impact. A prolific contributor to the field with over 30 techni cal publications\, Dr. Drewes holds a PhD in Computer Engineering from the University of Central Florida and an MBA from Texas A&M\, and has served as an Adjunct Professor at UCF since 1994. He brings a rare blend of deep technical expertise and executive-level strategic vision to today's conver sation on autonomy.\n\nKind regards\,\n\nAndrew\n\n\n_____________________ ___________________________________________________________\nMicrosoft Tea ms meeting\nJoin: https://teams.microsoft.com/meet/352124160499588?p=DQzH1 yTjK4vetRfxg4\nMeeting ID: 352 124 160 499 588\nPasscode: hv6HH9a8\n______ __________________________\nNeed help?<https://aka.ms/JoinTeamsMeeting?omk t=en-GB> | System reference<https://teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-join/19%3 ameeting_YWI4MjA3M2YtMjFlYi00OWZhLWFkZjYtYTUxN2IxNmI2YjBh%40thread.v2/0?co ntext=%7b%22Tid%22%3a%222e9f06b0-1669-4589-8789-10a06934dc61%22%2c%22Oid%2 2%3a%22e361e7b5-d66e-470e-9272-be8eb05a925e%22%7d>\nDial in by phone\n+44 20 3855 5143\,\,542759037#<tel:+442038555143\,\,542759037#> United Kingdom \, City of London\nFind a local number<https://dialin.teams.cloud.microsof t/41ca4bf1-0212-4fa6-bde8-4d05362d3446?id=542759037>\nPhone conference ID: 542 759 037#\nFor organisers: Meeting options<https://teams.microsoft.com /meetingOptions/?organizerId=e361e7b5-d66e-470e-9272-be8eb05a925e&tenantId =2e9f06b0-1669-4589-8789-10a06934dc61&threadId=19_meeting_YWI4MjA3M2YtMjFl Yi00OWZhLWFkZjYtYTUxN2IxNmI2YjBh AT thread.v2&messageId=0&language=en-GB> | R eset dial-in PIN<https://dialin.teams.cloud.microsoft/usp/pstnconferencing >\n[Company Logo]\nThe University of Edinburgh is a charitable body\, regi stered in Scotland\, with registration number SC005336.
