Dear all,

Just a kind reminder that Rowan’s talk is happening today. The corrected details are:

Location: IF3.07 (Informatics Forum)
Time: 1pm

Teams info
Link: https://teams.microsoft.com/meet/396902776270706?p=VEWZqlMCjYRrItLM3j
Meeting ID: 396 902 776 270 706
Passcode: fT9dj345

There are no time slots to meet Rowan, but he will stay after the talk if there are any further questions.

Lastly, thanks to Julian, Bob, Ruchira, David, and Alexandros for pointing out the mistakes in my previous email (which include inventing a third floor on the ground floor of an unfindable building...)

All the best!
Matias

Dear all,

Dr Rowan Border (link), who is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Cyprus, will be visiting Edinburgh this Thursday 1st October. He will give a talk at 1pm in G3.07 IF3.07 about his work on robot mapping (details below). He’ll also stick around if you want to ask him more questions about his current and prior work.

All the best
Matias

Title: "Towards a shared representation for robot autonomy"

Abstract: Autonomous robots in the real world often need to operate with limited onboard compute and intermittent low-bandwidth communication. Existing systems often need to maintain multiple map representations of the surrounding environment to support task-specific requirements, which increases their computational cost and communication overhead. This presentation explores work towards creating a common map representation that can encode information for multiple tasks and be efficiently shared between large robot teams.

Bio: Rowan Border is a postdoctoral researcher with the Vision for Robotics Lab (V4RL) at the University of Cyprus, working on autonomous aerial mapping systems. He earned a DPhil in Engineering Science from the University of Oxford, with a research focus on view planning for autonomous exploration and mapping. Rowan was previously a postdoctoral researcher at the Oxford Robotics Institute (ORI), working with the Estimation, Search, and Planning (ESP) and the Dynamic Robot Systems (DRS) research groups, where he led a project to develop an autonomous aerial mapping platform with multi-mission capabilities. The platform was designed for surveying large outdoor structures over multiple flights to perform infrastructure inspection.
