REMINDER - talk for Friday 11 September

-----

Dear all,

Please attend our joint ILCC/ CDT NLP seminar talk by Sergey Troshin, on September 11, 2026 at 11:00-12:00.

Speaker: Sergey Troshin, University of Amsterdam

https://airtable.com/appS4gTxm7BAJVK3b/tbl2FNoLdHQD7OdUx/recNNoH0yk7h0SuNh/fldsX5wdccAwWEXD7/attqiYkumCDlc6ZZG

Room: IF, G.03

Title: Large language models as probabilistic sample generators: from steering to self-refinement.

Abstract: We will discuss and view the autoregressive large language models (LLMs) as powerful and flexible probabilistic models. In the first part of the talk, we primarily focus on single-sample generation, where we will review the main mechanisms LLMs expose to us to balance accuracy and creativity when generating outputs. We will define a notion of sampling risk and overview efficient steering approaches. In the second half of the talk, we will operate at the level of sampling multiple outputs, in sequence or in parallel, introducing the notions of self-refinement and test-time scaling. Through a series of controlled experiments, we will show when, and maybe why, self-refinement works, and whether there are limits to this approach on the path to self-improving AI.

Book a meeting: For staff or students who’d like to meet with Sergey Troshin during their visit please check availability using the booking form.
